She said: “Honestly? Our biggest fear at the time was that we would get on the stage and no one would come. We thought everyone would protest and go off and see bands they actually liked.”
Despite the backlash they faced from the crowd, the pair received a nod of approval from fellow musicians for how they handled the situation – Celeste antagonising festival-goers: ‘You guys are such a good crowd,’ and Daphne teasing: ‘I’m loving the signs. Die! Yes, I will’, all while remaining on stage for an impressively long amount of time.
Daphne explains: “Backstage, Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine were coming up to us and telling us how hardcore we were – how they wouldn’t have stayed out there.
“It was definitely the best thing we did, our crowning achievement.”
After being booed and bottled off stage at Reading Festival, Daphne and Celeste’s label ‘quickly dissolved’ and the pair seemingly moved on from their pop careers, instead breaking into the world of theatre.
However, the pair are now set to make a grand return to music, with a single titled ‘You and I Alone’ which is reported as being a world away from their noughties tunes.
The duo decided to leap back into the music world after being contacted by Ben Jacobs (a.k.a. Max Tundra) and recorded the song four years ago.
Jacobs explains: “I thought, if I was going to bring them back all these years on, it had to be different to what they did before.
“It would have been easier to pick someone really respected like Charlotte Gainsbourg but this was more of a challenge, taking a band people were chucking bottles of piss at.”
