Everyone has that *onemovie that burrows into their brain and sticks with them forever. For some people, it’s an emotionally scarring flick, like Bambi or The Lion King. Maybe it was an intellectually stimulating or provocative film that changed the way you understand the world around you, like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Shawshank Redemption. No matter where you fall on this “lasting impression” spectrum, one thing’s for sure: No one ever forgets the first movie that scared the living daylights outta them.
For us bona fide horror fans, it’s ghost movies or bust. Sure, chainsaws and maniacal sharks deserve their time in the sun, but come on, GHOSTS!!! It’s never clear if they come in peace and just want to hang out or if they’re seeking revenge because you happen to occupy the lovely carriage house where they grew up. Ghost movies tend to be the perfect scary-movie cocktail of otherworldly creepiness, jump scares, and psychological trickery.
So if you’re in the mood to feel something—anything!—right now and being scared sh*tless will do, then cue up one of the 61 scariest ghost movies of all time. I’m not saying you won’t be able to sleep tonight, but I’m also not not saying that. Sending you thoughts and prayers.

Watching this movie is basically an exercise for your imagination to conjure up the worst possible thing. I ended up leaving my friend all by herself halfway through the movie and had to sleep in the same bed as my parents. I was 16…and now I’m 23 and still not over it.

Unless you don’t find Sigourney Weaver writhing around in bed after being possessed by a demon scary, in which case we should never watch a movie together.

A modern horror movie so good, it inspired an entire universe of future films including two more Conjurings, the Annabelle series, and The Nun (we’ll get to that in a moment). The Conjuring is inspired by a real-life pair of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), who come to help a family whose farmhouse may be haunted.

And every time he’s onscreen, you can’t help but imagine him in an “I Heart T.S.” tank top frolicking in the waves with a bunch of supermodels, which makes the whole movie-watching experience far less traumatizing!

Beetlejuice (1988)
One of the most beloved movies of the ’80s, this classic Tim Burton comedy is ghostly gold. Micheal Keaton is absolutely iconic as Beetlejuice himself, and Winona Ryder kills it as a surly goth teenager. Fun fact: Beetlejuice’s real name is actually Betelgeuse. THE MORE YOU KNOW.

Ghost Ship (2002)
Honestly, not sure what I need to spell out here. It’s about a ship full of ghosts. And also, the ship itself is a ghost? Either way, a bunch of humans make the mistake of boarding, and some horrifying sh*t goes down because apparently these undead dudes do not like random visitors interrupting their ghostly seamen activities.

Ghostbusters (1984)
I believe it was Shakespeare who once mused, “If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?” Ghostbusters. And those wise words still hold true, because Ghostbusters remains the best movie about ghosts of all time—and frankly, it’s pretty scary! Unless you don’t find Sigourney Weaver writhing around in bed after being possessed by a demon scary, in which case we should never watch a movie together.

Susperia (2018)
A remake of the 1977 classic about a ballet dancer who gets involved in a supernatural conspiracy, the 2018 version stars Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton, and honestly, it’s a LOT to process. But seeing as it traumatized its own stars—Dakota says it “f*cked me up so much that I had to go to therapy”—you’re going to want to give it a chance.

The Invisible (2006)
When a young teen is brutally beaten to near-death, he starts haunting a disturbed girl who was one of his attackers. She’s the only one who can sense him, so she’s his only hope at leading the cops to his body before he dies. If that sounds like a very weird, dark rom-com, you’re not entirely wrong!

Mama (2013)
After two young girls are abandoned in a forest cabin, they’re taken in by their uncle and his wife (played by GoT’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jessica Chastain). Before that, though, they’ve been completely alone for five years, protected only by the mysterious “Mama.”
Well, it turns out, Mama decided to follow them to their new home. This was honestly one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen, but it also has one of the most satisfying twists of all time. Sorry, M. Night Shyamalan.
