The New England Patriots have been docked two days of organized team activities after violating offseason rules, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
The Patriots canceled an OTA scheduled for Thursday and another one next week, according to that report.
The specific violation hasn’t been disclosed publicly, though Mark Daniels of MassLive.com noted that “history suggests that OTA violations typically center around player contact in what should be non-contact practices.”
The NFL offseason program is currently in its third phase during which teams are allowed to have offenses and defenses face each other in 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, but no contact is permitted.
A number of teams have been penalized for OTA infractions in the past, including the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys last offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers in 2021, the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 and the Seattle Seahawks in both 2016 and 2012.
The Pats will now have eight days of optional organized team activities and a three-day minicamp. Thursday’s scheduled organized team activities were set to be the first opened to the media before being canceled.
The past three seasons have been mediocre at best in New England following Tom Brady’s departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and eventual retirement this offseason. The Pats have had just one winning season and one playoff berth since his defection, going 25-25 overall.
Now they’ll have two fewer OTAs to work with as they seek a playoff return.
