Among the cast of colourful characters preparing to take part in the Jubilee parade on Horse Guards is a group of Daleks, threatening passers-by that they will be “exterminated”.

The extra-terrestrial band of mutants from the sci-fi television programme Doctor Who will be rolling along with cultural icons from the 1960s in the decade-by-decade Time of Our Lives act of the pageant.

“Surrender now, you have been exterminated! Do not threaten the Daleks!” one of the villains shouted as it charged towards squealing onlookers.

One of the operators, Simon James, 48, said he did not mind spending many hours in the suit.

“I have a nice comfy seat, so I’m going to get the best seat in the house,” he told the PA news agency.

In his mechanical Dalek voice, the train driver from Birmingham added: “I am very excited to be taking part in the Platinum Jubilee.

“The Queen has done this country an amazing service and we are here to pay respect to the sovereign”.

A joke was made at Boris Johnson’s expense during the Platinum Party at the Palace, in what became the second embarrassing moment of the jubilee celebrations for the Prime Minister.

Comedian Lee Mack made light of the so-called partygate affair in Downing Street during the concert in front of Buckingham Palace to mark the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.

Speaking with the Prime Minister in attendance, who was in the royal box, Mack said: “Finally we can say the words ‘party’ and ‘gate’ and it’s a positive.”

The impresario has put together a selection of musical theatre shows featuring stars including Lin-Manuel Miranda for the BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace concert.

Speaking backstage, Lord Lloyd-Webber told the PA news agency: “The thing about the Queen is that she is most extraordinary in her sense of duty, everything that she has done for our nation, and to try and harmonise everybody and bring everybody together is almost impossible to put into words.

“And she will never, ever do anything where she puts herself before duty.”

The monarch received affectionate tributes from the Prince of Wales and national figures during Saturday night’s Platinum Party at the Palace that saw Sir Rod Stewart, Diana Ross and Duran Duran perform for thousands.

And in a comic sketch that delighted the nation, the Queen had tea with Paddington Bear and revealed, like the furry character, she is partial to a marmalade sandwich.

In his personal tribute Charles spoke movingly about the Queen, calling her “Mummy” and described how “you laugh and cry with us and, most importantly, you have been there for us…” in a speech to thousands of spectators in The Mall.

On Sunday, millions will gather for patriotic street parties, picnics and barbecues, with more than 85,000 Big Jubilee Lunches being held across the UK.

Speaking after his performance, the Maggie May writer said: “It was fabulous. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and while I’ve done it before, never on this scale.”

Reflecting on what it is like to meet the Queen, Sir Rod said: “She’s homely. She’s funny. I’ve had so many funny occasions with her that make me smile.

“She’s just wonderful. “

Party at the Palace revellers have said they felt like “part of history” celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee from the grounds of her home.

Some 22,000 people heard live speeches by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales amid performances from stars including Diana Ross, Duran Duran and rock band Queen at the Buckingham Palace event on Saturday night.

Impressive visuals of the Queen were projected on to the royal residence during the patriotic two-and-a-half hour event, and drones drew three-dimensional corgis and cups of tea in the sky before a closing performance by Diana Ross.

Dean Carpenter, 53, a lecturer from Andover in Wiltshire, who also served in the military, said being at the palace felt like being “part of history”.

Mr Carpenter, who was wearing a Union Jack-patterned suit and attended with his wife Lesley Carpenter, 55, told PA: “It was amazing, absolutely fantastic – especially the royal family being there.

“The monarchy means a lot to me because I served in the military for 26-and-a-half years so the Queen was my boss for all that time.

“She was a good boss, she looked after me. I wanted to pay tribute.

“I needed to be here and be part of the atmosphere part of the crowd.

“I want to tell my grandkids ‘we were here’. It’s part of history.”

Reflecting on what it is like to meet the Queen, Sir Rod said: “She’s homely. She’s funny. I’ve had so many funny occasions with her that make me smile.

“She’s just wonderful. “

Sir Rod said the Queen is “a constant” in our lives, adding: “There’s not many of those. Not many at all.”

Buckingham Palace revellers enjoy ‘being part of history’

Party at the Palace revellers have said they felt like “part of history” celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee from the grounds of her home.

Some 22,000 people heard live speeches by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales amid performances from stars including Diana Ross, Duran Duran and rock band Queen at the Buckingham Palace event on Saturday night.

Impressive visuals of the Queen were projected on to the royal residence during the patriotic two-and-a-half hour event, and drones drew three-dimensional corgis and cups of tea in the sky before a closing performance by Diana Ross.

Dean Carpenter, 53, a lecturer from Andover in Wiltshire, who also served in the military, said being at the palace felt like being “part of history”.

Mr Carpenter, who was wearing a Union Jack-patterned suit and attended with his wife Lesley Carpenter, 55, told PA: “It was amazing, absolutely fantastic – especially the royal family being there.

“The monarchy means a lot to me because I served in the military for 26-and-a-half years so the Queen was my boss for all that time.

“She was a good boss, she looked after me. I wanted to pay tribute.

“I needed to be here and be part of the atmosphere part of the crowd.

“I want to tell my grandkids ‘we were here’. It’s part of history.”

Yesterday, the prince spoke of his Grandmother, as well as the importance of climate action.

He said: “It’s my firm hope that my grandmother’s words are as true in seventy years’ time as they are tonight that as nations we come together in common cause, because then there is always room for hope.

“Tonight has been full of such optimism and joy – and there is hope. Together, if we harness the very best of humankind, and restore our planet, we will protect it for our children, for our grandchildren and for future generations to come.

“They will be able to say – with pride at what’s been achieved – “What a Wonderful World”.
