There were around four miles of queues on the M5 on Tuesday afternoon following a multi-vehicle crash, with drivers having to face delays of up to 40 minutes. Just after 4pm National Highways wrote on X: “Two lanes are closed on the M5 northbound within J2 (Oldbury) due to a collision involving at least three cars. We’re working to reopen the lanes.”

Around 30 minutes later the agency issued an update saying that all the vehicles involved in the collision were moved to the hard shoulder with all lanes reopening.

Delays decreasing

Traffic England says that the initial heavy congestion due to the accident has eased. However, rush hour delays remain when approaching the junction.

The delays have decreased from the original 45 minutes to around 10 minutes.

National Highways provides statement to the Express

The Express has obtained an exclusive statement from National Highways.

In it, the agency explained what happened this afternoon, saying: “Lanes 1 and 2 of (3) were closed on the M5 northbound within J2 for Oldbury following a multiple vehicle collision at around 4.05pm today.

“The vehicles involved have been cleared to the hard shoulder. Recovery has been arranged and all lanes have been reopened. There are some residual delays on the approach to the junction.”

When will normal traffic conditions return

Traffic England says that normal traffic conditions are expected between 5:30pm and 5:45pm.

There are currently delays of 40 minutes against expected traffic due to an earlier accident involving multiple vehicles.

All lanes now open

In a new update National Highways has said that all lanes are now open.

They added: “The vehicles involved in the earlier collision on the M5 northbound within J2 (Oldbury) have now been cleared to the hard shoulder.

“Traffic Officers have reopened all of the lanes with residual delays of up to 45 minutes and three miles of congestion back to J3 (Quinton).”

Collision took place just before rush hour

Drivers heading home during rush hour are expected to face some heavy delays.

The two lanes are still closed with no information currently available as to when they are likely to reopen.

National Highways has warned drivers heading northbound on the M5 about a 45-minute delay.

In a statement the agency wrote: “Two lanes are closed on the #M5 northbound within J2 (#Oldbury) due to a collision involving at least 3 cars.

“We’re working to reopen the lanes. Delays in excess of 45 minutes, approx. 3.5 miles of congestion.”
