Returning to the golden sands of Praia da Rocha in its sixth year, Afro Nation Portugal once again united the global diaspora for a three-day celebration of music, culture and community. Welcoming fans representing 180 countries worldwide, the world’s biggest Afrobeats festival continued to prove why it has become the most important annual gathering for the culture.
Across three days, the LIT Stage welcomed some of the biggest names in global music for a weekend packed with landmark performances. Burna Boy returned to the beach that has become synonymous with his Afro Nation legacy, making this year’s appearance even more memorable as he celebrated his 35th birthday.
Tyla delivered her first ever Afro Nation headline set, giving fans a scintillating glimpse into the exciting new era ahead of her forthcoming album ‘A*Pop’. Wizkid once again delivered a headline performance worthy of his status as one of Afrobeats’ greatest global ambassadors, while Asake, Olamide, Theodora and countless stars kept the energy soaring across the weekend.
Brazilian superstar Ludmilla created a powerful cultural moment at her debut Afro Nation show, connecting Portugal’s Lusophone community with Brazil and the wider African diaspora through a vibrant celebration of shared language, heritage and music. Gunna, Kehlani and Mariah The Scientist seamlessly brought transatlantic energy into the weekend’s rich musical tapestry, whilst French rap sensation Niska had the entire beach singing back every word in French, underlining Afro Nation’s truly international spirit.
One of the festival’s most memorable moments arrived after Wizkid‘s headline performance on Sunday night with the world exclusive live debut of DJ Tunez’ South Gidi Experience. Premiered as the festival’s first ever official main stage afterparty, the collaborative project fused the sounds of West and South Africa through music created by DJ Tunez, DJ Maphorisa, Wizkid and Mavo.
Over on the Piano People stage, South African dance music once again captured the spirit of the festival as the global home of Amapiano outside South Africa came alive every single day. Packed crowds danced from afternoon until late into the night as Uncle Waffles, Focalistic, Madumane, Kelvin Momo, and many more showcased the genre’s continued evolution, alongside Afro House and 3-Step sounds that have become an integral part of Afro Nation’s musical identity.
Beyond the music, Afro Nation continued expanding its week-long programme across Portimão. The hugely popular Afrotronic beach parties at NoSoloÁgua became daily hotspots for festival-goers, while sold out boat parties made this a trip to remember for so many. New for 2026, Afro Nation’s exclusive Hotel Takeovers elevated the experience even further, giving guests access to luxury pool parties, intimate artist meet and greets and unforgettable moments with some of the festival’s biggest stars.
As always, Flag Friday delivered one of the festival’s most powerful traditions, with thousands proudly carrying the flags of their nations in a vibrant display of heritage, identity and unity. It remains the defining image of Afro Nation: people from every corner of the world standing together, celebrating not what separates them, but everything that connects them.
The festival’s ever-growing international community saw the largest numbers travelling to Portugal from the UK, USA, France, Switzerland and Germany, while women accounted for 60% of all attendees, highlighting the diverse audience that continues to make Afro Nation its home. Afro Nation has become a global meeting point where the African diaspora comes together to celebrate identity, heritage and the sounds shaping generations around the world.
Afro Nation will return to Portugal from June 9th-11th 2027.
