This Saturday, May 6, millions of people of all ages and backgrounds will settle down in front of their televisions or big screens at special viewing parties in towns and cities across the UK, to watch King Charles III officially crowned King of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth countries, and his wife, Camilla, crowned Queen Consort.
The traditional ceremony at Westminster Abbey will echo the late Queen Elizabeth II’s service and will see the Recognition, the Anointing, the Coronation Oath, the Homage and a Royal procession – but not everyone is looking forward to it.
Here in Wales, a recent poll found that the majority of residents would vote to keep the monarchy – but almost half believe it feels ‘more like an English institution’ than something shared by the whole of the UK, while around one in three think the titles of the Prince and Princess of Wales should be abolished. Earlier, we shared 23 proper Welsh ways to avoid the coronation completely if you want nothing to do with it – and asked our readers if they’d be tuning in this weekend. While some people said they were looking forward to watching the historic ceremony unfold, many got in touch to tell us they won’t be watching the coronation and said they’ll be finding something just as important – or time-consuming – to do at home. Here’s our round-up of some of the most amusing things Welsh people will be doing this weekend to avoid the Coronation:
‘I’m going to clean my patio with a toothbrush…’
Welshman Mathew Owen joked he would be spending the Coronation weekend cleaning his patio with a toothbrush “while singing Calon Lân,” whilst local resident Graham Wright said he’d prepped his Netflix to-watch list and was ready for a binge!
“Netflix and Prime lists written, laptop and power cable and extension ready to go, nibbles and drinks stocked up, hammock and umbrella set up in the garden and I’m good to go!” he said.
Meanwhile, Richard Mills is going to do some work on his campervan ready for the summer. “Will be rebuilding the front suspension on my camper and giving it a service and underseal, ready for summer adventures!” he said. Whilst Harri Owen is considering helping his mum with the housework to avoid the service! “[I] might help mum around the house so I can do anything but watch it!” he joked.
Echoing the DIY theme, Richard Sullivan said: “If the sun is shining I got gardening to do, if it’s raining I got DIY tasks that I been putting off.” “I be cutting the grass with a pair of scissors,” added Rhys Morris.

‘Going to the pub’
Several of our readers told us they would be heading to the pub this Bank Holiday weekend. Stephen Prosser said he was looking forward to going to the pub for a game of darts, whilst Andrew Thomas was going to have a drink or two at home. “Using the Coronation as an excuse to get p****d in my kitchen, away from any tv!” he said.
“Let’s go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over,” springs to mind!
‘I’ll be watching rugby’
Rugby fan Laura Leigh Watkins recommended everyone not wanting to watch the coronation headed to their local rugby club to support their local team. “Go and watch your local rugby club play the backlog of games before end of season!” she recommended.
“I’ll be watching Neath RFC lol” added Phill Laws.
‘I’ll be watching literally anything else’
Whilst the Coronation will inevitably dominate several news channels, there are dozens of other TV channels to choose from – not to mention thousands of programmes on streaming services.
Among those spending the Coronation weekend watching anything but the Coronation, Gareth Walters said: “I’ll be watching Disney Plus or go on my tablet or listening to my music!”
While Ryan Lewis said: “Formula 1 and football on, couldn’t bare to watch the coronation knowing it’s going to cost £50-£100million to put a crown on someone’s head during a cost-of-living crisis!” Echoing Ryan’s thoughts, Ant Dwt Jones said he would be spending the Bank Holiday working, “so I can pay my bills and buy food!”
