Ryanair has unveiled a significant alteration to its boarding pass policy, set to come into effect before the summer. This crucial update, along with the airline’s stringent rules on hand luggage and other aspects, is vital for passengers to bear in mind before heading out on their holidays.

Non-compliance can result in additional charges at the airport, so it’s essential to stay informed before booking your Ryanair flights. One historic change that all travellers should be aware of before setting off is that the budget airline is putting an end to physical boarding passes, so you will need to make sure that your phone is fully charged before you go.

Ryanair’s boss Michael O’Leary has confirmed that by May 2025, the airline will no longer issue physical boarding passes with 60 per cent of passengers already opting for mobile passes. Currently, flyers have the choice to print paper boarding passes or use the Ryanair app to download a digital version. They can also obtain a pass directly from the airline at the airport.

However, a £55 charge is levied on those who forget to check in and download their boarding passes before reaching the airport, reports the Express. From May 2025, the option to check in and print boarding passes at the airport will be completely removed.

“Our goal is to eliminate check-in desks at the airport, just like we’ve done with luggage counters”, O’Leary stated. “Everything will be managed through the app, making the process fully digital and eliminating paper entirely.

“I’m one of the last remaining people still showing up with my piece of paper. It also means, once we get everybody onto the app, nobody will ever again pay for a boarding pass at an airport – the airport check-in fee will be gone. So, I think it will be a smoother, easier journey for everybody.”

                          Hand luggage size restrictions

Ryanair may be renowned for its budget-friendly fares, but generous hand luggage allowances definitely aren’t part of the package. Passengers wishing to bring more than one small under-seat bag, either onboard or as checked luggage, will incur a fee.

However, resourceful travellers have discovered a workaround by finding bags online that meet Ryanair’s strict hand luggage dimensions, some costing less than £20. Measuring 40 x 19 x 25cm, these bags comply with Ryanair’s small under-seat cabin bag requirements of 40 x 20 x 25cm.

One bag that has caused quite a stir online in recent months thanks to its ability to curb Ryanair’s excess luggage fees is the Narway underseat foldable travel duffel bag, available on Amazon. Though the bag usually retails for £15.99, at the time of writing it’s been slashed by 25% to just £11.99.

Another top-seller is the Aerolite Ryanair Cabin Bag, also available to buy on Amazon

According to the company: “We specifically designed our Aerolite holdall to measure 40 x 20 x 25cm which is EXACTLY the maximum allowed size you can take for free in the cabin when flying with Ryanair. It is also accepted on virtually all major airlines worldwide; Including easyJet, British Airways, Etihad, Emirates, Delta, Flybe, Lufthansa, Norwegian, Jet2, KLM, Qatar, Wizz Air and Virgin Atlantic to name just a few”

In line with Ryanair’s baggage policy, each passenger can bring a small personal bag of these dimensions on board at no extra cost, conveniently fitting right under the seat ahead – a perfect match for the Aerolite bag they’re offering.

Adding to the appeal, the versatile carrier comes with a budget-friendly price tag, being advertised at just £9.34 for the moment. On TikTok, @mypassporttohappy’s Ali shared her take on the viral sensation, remarking: “This is the bag that is currently trending on TikTok. So it’s an Amazon bag and it fits perfectly on all flights, so you can use it as a carry-on so that you don’t have to buy extra luggage.”

Travelers wanting additional luggage space have the option to upgrade to Priority, which not only allows for more bags but includes other benefits too. Online pricing for Priority plus two additional bags ranges from £6 to £36, while waiting until the airport desk could see prices skyrocket between £20 to £38.

Should Priority be fully booked or passengers prefer to check their luggage, there is also a 10kg check-in bag option available.

However, if you arrive at the boarding gate with a 10kg bag that hasn’t been pre-booked, you could face a hefty £46.00 fee for last-minute check-in if it’s turned away at the gate.

Ryanair customers are being reminded to reach the airport well in advance, as the airline has strict timings to adhere to. Passengers are advised to arrive no later than 40 minutes before their scheduled departure time, or risk incurring a hefty missed departure fee of £100.

If you find yourself arriving with less than 40 minutes before your flight is set to take off, you’ll be hit with the fee, which necessitates rebooking onto another flight.

This same charge applies to those who turn up “up to one hour after flight departure time”. According to Ryanair’s official site, this fee can be paid by those reaching the ticket desk within an hour of their original flight’s departure to secure a spot on the subsequent available flight.

They reiterate that this fee is charged per traveller for each leg of their journey.
