As a member of both Theatre Group and Showstoppers (the University’s theatre and musical theatre groups respectively), I have actually seen (and been associated with) numerous of their programs in my time. The Canterville Ghost definitely didn’t dissatisfy, I liked it!
The Canterville Ghost is an initially composed play by Philip Hoare. It follows an American household who move into the Canterville manor, haunted by the resident ghost, Sir Simon Canterville (Will Fieldhouse). The majority of the household torture Sir Simon and are not frightened of his shenanigans, much to his disgust.
The household, consisting of a mom, Lucrezia Otis (Mika Woods), dad, Hiram Otis (Callum Nelmes), and 4 kids, Edie (Olivia Grindon), Carol (Megan Jones), Virginia (Hannah Swadling) and Washington (Jorge Mateos) all had fascinating, private characters and terrific American accents. The directing, by Hoare himself, was excellent. It kept a great rate and was fascinating to see. Unique discusses need to be provided to Lady Canterville (Francesca Ward), Mrs Umney (Cicely Donnett) and Cecil (Issy Steventon). Their characters were amusing and appealing and truly spruced up the phase.
I actually liked the method the program emitted such a scary ambiance. I was questioning how the production and tech group would reveal the ghost and make it scary however it was truly creative. Using sound results– creaking doors, thunder and more– and lighting, especially the green, was an actually creative, and well-used, method of offering a scary ambiance and comparing the ghost and living characters. Especially, the spotlights were well-used and added to the environment. The production, done by Emily Dennis, Joely Chalken and Jago Laws-Robinson, likewise developed a scary ambiance. Embed in the 1800 s, the outfits and staging fit the duration well and Fieldhouse’s older, brilliant green outfit complemented both the lighting and made him appear older than the rest. As this, I liked the frame that fell off the wall mid-way through the very first act. It’s one of my preferred paranormal scary movie tropes so it was truly amazing to see it on phase! The blood area behind the frame was likewise extremely skillfully done, however you will need to see the program to see what that is everything about.
One little touch I truly delighted in was the audience immersion. Virginia, and later on other characters, talk about a painting on the wall. The painting is the audience. She jokingly explains the painting and individuals within it, and it was an actually good touch.
Finally, for a low-tech slot, the set was terrific. The grandpa clock had a spotlight pointing at the face. This was utilized to reveal the hand inexplicably turning through set modifications. I actually liked this as it provided something to enjoy throughout set modifications and sidetracked the audience as individuals moved things around the phase. The background was skillfully made with covering paper and picture frames and paintings. The very little staging with a couch and table indicated that the focus was on the acting and thriller was right away produced as I got in the theatre to see 2 rows of bleachers obstructed off by a sheet. You’ll need to see the program to discover why!
