British legislator David Amess was “assassinated” while conference constituents last year by a “fanatical, radicalised Islamist terrorist,” a court heard Monday as the implicated killer went on trial.
Veteran Conservative MP Amess was stabbed to death at a Methodist church in Leigh-on-Sea in southeast England in October.
Ali Harbi Ali, 26, from north London, was detained at the scene and has pleaded not guilty to murder and to preparing acts of terrorism.
On the opening day of his trial at the Old Bailey court in main London, districtattorney Tom Little informed jurors that Ali was unquestionably accountable for the “cold and determined murder”.
“This was absolutelynothing less than an assassination for terrorist functions,” he stated, keepinginmind it was “carried out duetothefactthat of a distorted and twisted and violent ideology.
“It was a murder brought out by that young male (Ali) who for lotsof years hadactually been preparation simply such an attack and who was, and is, a dedicated, fanatical, radicalised Islamist terrorist.”
Amess, a 69-year-old daddy of 5, was a long-serving member of parliament for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s judgment Conservative celebration.

Jurors heard that the offender then made a phone call in which he stated: “I’ve done it since of Syria. I’ve done it since of the innocent individuals. I’ve done it duetothefactthat of the battle. He shouldhave to passaway.”
Amess was veryfirst chosen to parliament in 1983, veryfirst representing Basildon in Essex, then closeby Southend West.
Hundreds of residents turned out in the beachfront town to pay their appreciates after his death. Pope Francis applauded the Catholic legislator’s “devoted public service” in a unique message read out at his November funeralservice.
